Charles Henry O'Reilly Sr., 92, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at his home, following a short illness. "Chub," as he was fondly known, was born on February 15, 1913, in St. Louis, Mo., to Charles F. O'Reilly and Clara Marie Bohn O'Reilly. He is survived by his wife, Kenna Lou. Other surviving family members include his four children and their families: Charlie O'Reilly Jr. and wife, Mary Beth, Rosalie O'Reilly Wooten, Larry O'Reilly and wife, Dr. Nancy O'Reilly, and David O'Reilly. Chub was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His grandchildren are as follows: Austin O'Reilly, Matt O'Reilly, Lindsay O'Reilly, Ragan O'Reilly, Leigh Flisher and husband, Rich, Lauren O'Reilly, Carrie Wooten McLiney and husband, Casey, Randy Wooten, Ryan O'Reilly, Tim O'Reilly and wife, Brooke, and Pat O'Reilly and wife, Robin. He is also survived by brothers, Tony and John O'Reilly, and sisters, Katherine Anderson, Mary Ann Schlesinger, and Clara Marie Koch; and over 30 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, of 35 years, Isabel Stiefvater O'Reilly, and by his wife of 24 years, Alma Bauer O'Reilly. Also preceding him in death are two brothers, Byrne and Joe O'Reilly, and two sisters, Agnes (Sister Mary Antonia) and Mary Louise Arnold. Chub was blessed with a large family, a successful business career, and many wonderful friends. All who knew him will remember his gentle manner, his kind ways, his warm and friendly smile, and his ability to add humor to any occasion with one of his Irish toasts. In November 1957, Chub and his father, C.F., founded O'Reilly Auto Parts by opening the first store in Springfield. Although the company has grown to 1300 stores and 16,000 employees, his success is better measured by the mark he has left on the people with whom he worked and did business. He worked at O'Reilly Auto Parts for 48 years, and retired in 2002 at the age of 89. He set high standards of work ethic, customer satisfaction, and integrity in running his business. O'Reilly team members today credit him with all that makes the O'Reilly business culture work. Chub attended high school at St. Agnes and was a long time member of St. Agnes Parish. He completed an Associate Degree in Business at Drury College at the age of 50. In more recent years, he was a member of Holy Trinity Parish. He supported his church and the Catholic schools in many ways throughout his life, and truly lived his beliefs. He was a member of Host Lions Club and could be found at the Fair each year manning the Lions Club Duck Pond. He supported fundraising efforts for United Way, the Catholic Schools, and The Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. He served on the Advisory Board at St. John's Hospital. He supported these and numerous other charities and organizations throughout his life. He loved his golf and was an officer of the Springfield Senior Golf Association. He was also a longtime member of Twin Oaks Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing and in more recent years playing a "mean" game of gin rummy with his buddies. He enjoyed many winters in Florida, where he also enjoyed golfing and playing cards with his friends at The Meadows. Chub loved life and always viewed it in a positive and interesting way. he loved the Ozarks, and its lakes and rivers, where he enjoyed fishing and even took up water skiing later in his life. Everyone he met was his friend. "It is important to treat others with honesty, " he said, and that credo served him well. All his business success notwithstanding, he hoped most of all to be remembered as honest, forthright and a lovable father to his family. In that, as in every other endeavor, he was a genuinely successful man.
