"Sadly, over the last few weeks, we have experienced some tragedies and loss of life," Day said. "Any loss of life, regardless of the circumstance, is a tragedy for us as a community." The first incident happened shortly after midnight on Saturday morning. At about 12:33 a.m., officers responded to Southeast Ramona Street, just north of 92nd & Foster, and found one man hurt after a shooting. The gunfire was reported at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday near Northwest 9th Avenue and Couch Street. First responders tried to help a man with a gunshot wound, but he died at the scene. Then, just before midnight, officers found a 19-year-old man hurt after a shooting at a home on Northeast Thompson Court. Police told KATU the home was being rented on AirBNB "where teenagers were having a party." The injuries to the man were non-life-threatening, according to PPB. Chief Day said all of those shootings are under investigation, and commented on how the bureau takes all violent events such as these seriously. Day echoed the progress in curbing the city's gun violence on Monday. He said that after the weekend incidents, the number of homicides in Portland rose to 41. He said that is a more-than-30% drop from the 62 homicides Portland had seen by the same point in 2024. "One of our primary goals in the police bureau is to reduce crime and the fear of crime. Although the numbers indicate we are reducing crime, we continue to recognize the legitimacy of the fear of crime. And that's what many people in these neighborhoods rightfully so experienced." Day promised the individuals and families impacted by the weekend violence that the bureau will thoroughly investigate each case.
