The neighborhood is safe, but it's always possible for problems.

It has the typical flimsy handle lock.

Someone can obviously cut the screen with a box cutter, reach in and open the lock.

Is there an easy way to put a bit more security on storm doors?

There are several types of audible alarms that you could buy on Amazon that would sound an alarm if the door were opened or if someone walked just inside the doorway. These alarms work well, but they have no way of differentiating between a burglar and a homeowner or his authorized guest.

My guess is that the alarm would be more trouble than it's worth since it would sound every time that someone opened or closed the door or walked directly in front of it (depending on the exact type of alarm you buy).

You could also put one of these motion alarms outside of each door, but again, it's going to sound every time that someone walks under/through the invisible beam.

It might be best just to add an additional latch to each door that would be hard to reach from the outside even if the screen were cut. This wouldn't guarantee that the door couldn't be forced open, but it would likely make enough noise if someone did so that you could hear it in the rest of the house unless you have a large multi-level house.

It looks like your choice may boil down to "convenience vs safety". The safest option won't be the most convenient and the most convenient option won't be the safest. You'll just have to decide the "convenience vs safety" option that is most tolerable for you and your family. Good luck.
