Info in reskins is in addition to information from the sourcebooks. In a case where there is conflicting information, the one here replaces sourcebook lore. species are not capitalised, unlike real-life human races. This section explains why. In general, names of species are not capitalised, while names of races and ethnicities are (e.g. human vs Asian). In the Forgotten Realms, the species have very different DNA. In real life, creatures like chimps with even slightly different DNA are treated as a different species. Thus, when writing about them, we don't capitalise the word 'chimpanzees'. This implies that these are actually completely different species. Socially, however, they are treated as races. In the Forgotten Realms, because beings with a shared culture, social structure, and heritage have very different DNA, they are called 'races'. Calling them a race is meant to have people treat them as sentient beings in RP rather than like animals and plants. Calling them a race tells us how they are treated in the Forgotten Realms world. Only in academic writing, and accounts of the races, because they are very genetically different, we will treat the names of the 'races' as species names and use lowercase to denote a common noun. E.g. a human, a dwarf, a yaojing, a saru. (责任编辑:) |
