CD 1, Deutsche Grammophon Recordings 1951–54, consists of selections from Furtwänger legendary recordings for DGG in the 1950s: the Haydn 88, the Schubert Great C major, the Schumann Fourth, plus a movement from Furtwängler's own Second Symphony and a rare live recording of a Handel Concerto Grosso (op. 6 no. 5) CD 2, Polydor Shellac Recordings 1926–37, offers a wide-ranging selection of earlier recordings, and included many newly mastered recordings. Don't be put off by the dates. Our engineers in Hanover have improved the sound out of all recognition. Many of the items on CD 2 have been available in a lmited-edition Japanese box-set, but these new masterings offer a totally new experience: check out Furtwängler's Brandenburg no. 3 for dynamism, his Eine kleine Nachtmusik for charm and wit. CD 2 also includes two first-time releases on Deutsche Grammophon: a rehearsal extract from Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and Dvorak's Slavonic Dance op. 46 no. 3 - prevíously available only on limited-distribution independents, using 78 rpm discs as sources, not the original matrices, which only we possess - to our clear advantage |
