COLUMBIA, S.C. — Hey there Mega Million players, there are some changes coming to the lottery, beginning Saturday, April 5.
First: the price for Mega Millions tickets is going up to $5 per play. This is only the second price increase since the multi-state game play was sold more than 20 years ago and the first change since the current game matrix was adopted in 2017.
Second: the starting jackpots will be bigger -- jumping from $20 million to $50 million. Mega Millions estimates the average jackpot will also increase from the current $450 million to $800 million.
Also, the minimum amount players can win will rise from $2 to $10 on every winning ticket.
Third: the odds of winning will improve (slightly) to 1 in 290 million from 1 in 302 million.
Fourth: built-in multiplier! Every non-jackpot win will multiply its base prize by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x. Prizes in the new game will range from $10 to $10 million versus the $2 to $1 million now.
The first drawing for the new Mega Millions game is Tuesday, April 8.
