Text files in various encodings

Text files are a versatile data format. They are lightweight, simple, and can be opened and edited using numerous applications. Text files can use different encoding standards, which dictates how characters and symbols are represented in binary form.

ASCII is the most basic character encoding standard that uses 128 binary codes to represent upper- and lowercase letters, numeric digits, and other symbols common in Latin scripts. In comparison, UTF-8 is a more modern standard that includes symbols from non-Latin scripts, such as Chinese or Arabic characters. UTF-16 is yet another encoding standard that covers a greater range of characters but requires significantly more storage space than UTF-8.

When creating or saving a file, it is important to ensure the correct character encoding is used for compatibility between different software packages and operating systems. For instance, different software may default to different encoding standards which could cause errors if opening or editing the file with other applications. Specifying the correct encoding helps guarantee that all text displays properly in any application it’s used with.

Text files have many purposes, ranging from storing structured data like address books to displaying information to users within interfaces. They are essential in programming languages for coding instructions as well; developers use text files to write code by hand or through compatible programs like Processing and Visual Studio Code.
