The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department arrested the parents of missing 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro, Jake and Rebecca Haro, on Friday on suspicion of murder, though the child has not been found. The sheriff's office posted, "This morning, detectives from the Sheriff's Homicide Detail and Specialized Enforcement Division arrested Jake and Rebecca Haro at their residence in Cabazon for PC 187 – Murder. Investigators will continue their search for seven-month-old Emmanuel Haro." The ContextThe San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said the community is "deeply concerned" about this case. Officials said investigators have conducted "extensive searches" in Yucaipa and Cabazon for Emmanuel and any evidence providing information about his whereabouts or the circumstances of his disappearance. What To KnowEmmanuel was first reported missing on August 14, when his mother told deputies she was attacked while changing him outside a Yucaipa sporting goods store. Officials said multiple individuals were interviewed, including Rebecca and Jake Haro. Investigators allegedly found inconsistencies in Rebecca Haro's initial account, and she declined to continue the interview when asked about these inconsistencies.
Last week, the sheriff's office said investigators could not rule out foul play in Emmanuel's disappearance. On Wednesday, the officials said they would "welcome" the parents' cooperation if they choose to work with detectives. Sheriff's officials, backed by K-9 units, forensic teams and SWAT officers, served search warrants at the family's Cabazon home before arresting Rebecca and Jake Haro. Vincent Hughes, an attorney representing Jake Haro, confirmed that Jake was previously convicted of child cruelty in comments to KCAL News. "There was a conviction for child cruelty, which Jake is not running from," Hughes said. "He's not hiding from his record; it's publicly available information." What People Are SayingSan Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, in a press release: "Emmanuel continues to be the main focus of this investigation, and we will continue our efforts to locate him." Vincent Hughes, an attorney representing Jake Haro, told KCAL News: "It's no nexus between that case and this case here, and he should not be judged based on his past." What Happens NextThe sheriff's office said the search for Emmanuel will continue.
